I had a friend in the 1980's that specialized creating these kinds of airbrushed images. Jon Rawson did rather well for himself, even though the air brush technique was very time consuming. But with the onslaught of cheap photography his wonderful illustrations were no longer needed which put him out of business and eventually he became an art teacher at a local high school in the Chicago area.
