The Tribunal for Digital Purity convened beneath fluorescent lights that hummed with the certainty of regulations no one remembered writing.
The accused, identified only as The Studio Artist, stood quietly.
“You are charged,” declared the Judge, “with attempting to persuade the machine to dream on your behalf.”
The Artist sighed. “I believed it was my last chance to see anything. I had spent too much time gratifying myself with endless applause from the platform. I mistook repetition for vision.”
A clerk nodded solemnly and entered the confession into a form already completed before the hearing had begun.
The Judge adjusted his spectacles.
“Personal disappointment is not a legal defense. The studio exists precisely so that one may confront the terrifying possibility of having nothing to say. If every blank canvas becomes a reason to circumvent the process, then the canvas itself has become innocent while the artist has become procedural.”
The room applauded because a sign instructed it to.
The Artist asked whether redemption was possible.
“Certainly,” replied the Judge. “Return to your studio.”
“And then?”
“Wait.”
“For what?”
“That is not the concern of the Tribunal.”
The hearing ended exactly where it had begun: with forms, silence, and a door leading back to the same empty room where the work had always been waiting. The bureaucracy had issued its verdict, but the canvas remained gloriously indifferent.
