Yesterday, it chased mice. Today, it growls at the mailman. It still purrs when you scratch its belly, but also insists on being walked three times a day. It fetches sticks - but only when it feels like it. It begs for food, then turns up its nose when you give it some. It wags its tail when it's happy, but also when it's furious. Sometimes it fetches the newspaper and expects congratulations. Sometimes it climbs a tree and cannot get down. It loves water. It hates water. It guards the house against strangers - then hides under the sofa when the doorbell rings. It obeys commands... provided you do not give any.
The vet has resigned.
You are in therapy.
And... the animal itself has not even figured out whether it is supposed to meow or bark
