In the original version of the story, magicians were respected people. Because it was a rare skill, they came from all walks of life and thus stood somewhat apart from society. In modern times, Horatia is ruled by a triumvirate that needs magicians but also fears them. Modern mages learn only the most necessary knowledge to be able to work in their respective fields. The few who have the full knowledge for various reasons are criminalized and have to work underground.
Daniel is the heir to one of the old orders (similar to the rule of two in Star Wars), officially he works as a pediatrician while looking for a suitable apprentice.
