The temple doors stood open beneath the great iron astrolabe, its blackened spokes turning slowly in the windless dark. For three months, Elara had followed the cult’s trail through plague villages, abandoned monasteries, and the whispered confessions of men who had forgotten how to pray. Now she stood at the foot of their hidden sanctuary, torch raised high, and saw at last what they had worshipped: a congregation of shadows gathered around an altar carved from something that was not stone. Pale-robed priests moved among the candles, their faces concealed behind silver masks. Above them, the vaulted ceiling disappeared into darkness, and the enormous wheel of the astrolabe cast its crooked shadow across the floor like the fingers of some buried god reaching for the world.
Behind Elara, Tomas shifted his grip on the oil flask. “There must be a hundred of them.”
“Eighty-three,” she said. She had counted the cloaked figures from the hillside, watched the sentries change, memorized the passages and the stairwells. She had spent weeks learning their habits, and longer still learning what they feared. “And every last one believes this place cannot be found.” She glanced back at him, firelight catching the hard green-brown of her eyes. “Stay behind me until the bells begin. Then get everyone out.”
“Elara,” whispered Mara, her face white beneath her hood. “When they see us—”
“They will see the fire first.”
For one suspended instant, the whole vast chamber seemed to hold its breath. Elara tightened her fingers around the torch and felt the heat lick her cheek. Then she stepped forward, and the flame illuminated the strange symbols etched into the temple threshold. Somewhere beyond the altar, a bell began to toll. One of the silver-masked priests turned. Elara smiled without humor, swung the torch toward the oil-soaked hangings, and hurled it. Fire raced up the ancient cloth in a roaring golden wave, leaping from tapestry to timber, swallowing the cult’s sacred banners. The first scream shattered the silence; then came the thunder of overturned benches, the clatter of dropped blades, and the panicked stampede of men who had preached the end of the world but never imagined witnessing one. Elara charged into the blaze with her cloak streaming behind her, and the secret temple began to burn.
