The Second Contest: Thjalfi versus Hugi (The Race) Then Utgard-Loki asks what the young man is prepared to prove himself in. Thjalfi replies that he'll run a race against anyone Utgard-Loki chooses. He says it's a fine feat, but one must be very skilled at running if he expects to win. He promises that the race will begin immediately. Utgard-Loki rises and goes outside. There's a good running track on a level field. He summoned a young man named Hugi and told him to run a race with Thialfi. They began the first race, and Hugi found himself so far ahead that at the finish line he turned to face Thialfi. Then Utgard-Loki said, "You must exert yourself more vigorously, Thialfi, if you wish to win, though it is true that no man has ever been here before who seemed to me to be faster than you in a race. But now let us see the second race." They ran again. And when Hugi reached the end of the track and turned, Thialfi was still a good bowshot away from the finish line. Then Utgard-Loki said, "You run well, Thialfi, but it seems to me that you will not win this race. Now we will see the third race." They ran for the third time. And when Hugi reached the finish line and turned around, Thialfi hadn't even reached the halfway point. Everyone said that this race was enough.
