TRUE STORY
*The Mouse in My Hair*
Last night. I'm sleeping so deeply, tired like only a mom can be.
Then my head starts to itch.
Not a normal itch. Something... moves. I flick with my hand like this, rub my hair, feel nothing. Ah leave it, I'm probably sleeping and imagining things.
One minute later.
Again. That tingling. That moving. This time it's bigger. I grab in my hair -
And I FEEL something. Soft. Warm. Alive.
I screamed a scream from my lungs that probably woke up all of Windhoek. I throw that thing! I jump up with the baby in my arms, almost over the bed!
My little boy is sitting on the floor in full Spiderman position, eyes as big as saucers and he screams: "What's wrong Mommy?! MOMMY! Daddy! Daddy!" And crying. At that point we're all actually crying.
We search. Under the bed. Behind the pillows. In the blankets. Nothing. That thing is gone. Ghost-like gone.
After about five minutes we decide, okay, let's get back into bed. My 5-year-old holds me tight like a little bodyguard. "I'll protect you Mommy." But I can't sleep. I lie and scan the room like a security camera. Every shadow looks like something.
Then I see it.
On the curtain. A shadow. Tiny feet. Walking DOWN the curtain. Tap-tap-tap.
I put the light on!
And there he sits. A mouse.
Not just any mouse. A mouse with a plan. He thought my hair was a five-star Airbnb. A nest! He wanted to come make a nest in my head! And the cheeky thing - he wanted to come BACK for round two!
I think he thought: "Oh thank you aunty, nice and warm, I'll come again."
Never again will I sleep with my hair open. Never.
