ArtistSusanna and the Elders - a biblical parable (Old Testament, Book of Daniel) about a virtuous woman who is blackmailed and then falsely accused by two influential judges after she rejects them.
A biblical parable (Old Testament, Book of Daniel) about a virtuous woman who is blackmailed and then falsely accused by two influential judges after she rejects them. The main elements of the story:
The blackmail: Susanna, a wealthy Jewish woman living in Babylonian captivity, was spied on by two old judges (elders of the people) while bathing and tried to force her to commit adultery.
The false accusation: Susanna did not give in to the temptation, and the elders, out of revenge, accused her of sleeping with a young man in the garden.
The trial and rescue operation: Based on the laws of the time, the community sentenced the woman to death at the word of the elders, but the then young Daniel intervened.
The exposure: Daniel questioned the elders separately, who became contradictory during the interrogation (they named a different type of tree as the scene of the "deed").
Justice: The lie was exposed, Susanna was acquitted, and the two guilty elders were stoned to death according to the Mosaic laws.
The story has become a symbol of purity, faith, and divine justice...
