Oil on canvas, mid-nineteenth-century academic painting in the tradition of Romantic and Realist portraiture, a single young male figure standing three-quarter length before a weathered timber fence under an open sky, rendered with the luminous glaze-and-scumble technique of the Salon painters. The medium is heavy linen canvas primed warm ochre, the surface showing visible brushwork in the impasto of the highlights and thin translucent glazes in the shadows, with a fine network of age craquelure across the ground and a darkened varnish that warms the whole picture. The subject is a lean, broad-shouldered young man of perhaps twenty, sharply handsome in a hard, brooding way, his head tipped slightly down and forward so that he regards the viewer from beneath a heavy brow with dark, level, almost insolent eyes. His jaw is square and shadowed, his cheekbones high and flushed, his mouth set in a sullen line. His hair is thick, unruly and wind-tossed, swept up and back from the forehead in a tousled mass of auburn and russet brown, painted with crisp individual strokes and a warm red-brown underpaint that catches the sun like copper filings. He wears an abbreviated outer garment of dark blue-black leather, cut like a short frontiersman's jacket with an exaggerated stand collar turned up at the neck and open at the front so that his bare chest is exposed to the navel — the torso painted with careful anatomical modelling, the pectorals and the ridged abdominal muscles caught in warm raking light, the skin rendered in the traditional flesh palette of lead white, vermilion, yellow ochre and burnt umber, with cool grey-green half-tones along the shadowed flank. The jacket is ornamented with rows of small brass studs marching down the lapel, an embroidered shoulder-piece, and long fringes of tan and umber leather hanging in a heavy curtain from the sleeve and the hem, each strand separately delineated and trembling slightly in the breeze. A wide leather belt with a large circular cast-metal buckle stamped with a sunburst medallion cinches his waist, and below it he wears tight trousers of a deep indigo, painted with a lead-white highlight down the thigh to suggest worn, glossy hide, and reinforced at the hip with a great leather patch and rivets. The background is a rustic paling fence of grey sun-bleached boards, its verticals tilted and uneven, its surface scored with grain and knots and silvered by weather, closing off the middle distance on the left. Above and behind him, the sky is a deep saturated cerulean of powdered azure and smalt, paling toward the horizon, with two cumulus clouds built up in thick lead white and touched with warm shadow beneath, in the manner of the great cloud studies of the century. Beyond the fence at right, a low band of dusty green scrub and poplar tops recedes into a hazily atmospheric distance. The light is high and direct that carves the figure into brilliant planes and deep passages of shadow, in the spirit of Caravaggesque tenebrism softened by daylight, with a long cast shadow falling across the fence boards. The palette is restrained and earthy — bitumen, madder, indigo, ochre, and a cold sky blue against warm skin — held together by an overall amber varnish. The composition is a low-viewpoint three-quarter figure pressed close to the picture plane, the pose a little swaggering, weight on one leg, one arm dropped loose and relaxed at his side with the the other hand hooked casually at the belt.
An oil painting depicts a lean, shirtless man with tousled, auburn hair, standing against a rustic wooden fence in a western landscape. The man, with chiseled features, a light dusting of freckles, and intense eyes, wears a weathered, dark leather jacket adorned with fringe and intricate tooling, left open to reveal his sculpted chest and abs. A leather belt with a circular metal buckle cinches his matching dark leather trousers, which feature brown leather chaps on the left leg. The background showcases a dry, open plain under a partly cloudy sky with distant trees, rendered in a textured, painterly style reminiscent of a classic western portrait.
