Fëanor and his seven sons swore a terrible oath to reclaim the Silmarils—the three perfect jewels Fëanor had created and Morgoth had stolen. They vowed to pursue anyone, mortal or immortal, who kept a Silmaril from them. As the Silmarils passed from Morgoth to others (including fellow Elves), this oath drove the Fëanorians to commit atrocities against their own kin, leading to the Three Kinslayings.
