Physiology of Narcissistic Personality Traits
A person with narcissistic personality traits often shows:
Inflated self-image
Lack of empathy
Strong need for admiration
Sensitivity to criticism (fragile ego)
Here's how it links to physiology:
1. Brain Structure Differences:
Studies show narcissists may have less gray matter in the anterior insula, a part of the brain linked to empathy and emotional regulation.
Their prefrontal cortex may be highly active when thinking about themselves—exaggerating their own importance.
2. Stress Hormone Sensitivity:
Many narcissists are hypersensitive to rejection, which activates a cortisol spike (stress hormone), but instead of showing vulnerability, they react with aggression or arrogance.
3. Dopamine Drive:
They crave attention and admiration because it activates their dopamine system (reward pathway), similar to addiction.
Praise = dopamine high. Criticism = emotional crash.
