More about 26) ~Sri Lanka Green Pit Viper~

**Sri Lanka Green Pit Viper - Trimeresurus trigonocephalus

Short: A brilliantly emerald arboreal viper native only to Sri Lanka’s wet zone forests; graceful yet venomous, it faces decline due to deforestation and human fear.

Facts:

Habitat: Lowland and montane rainforests of Sri Lanka’s southwest wet zone.

Behavior: Nocturnal, solitary, and ambush-based predator.

Diet: Frogs, lizards, small birds, and rodents.

Threats: Forest fragmentation, illegal pet trade, and killing out of fear.

Status: Near Threatened (localized rarity in some areas).

Details:
The Sri Lanka Green Pit Viper is a jewel of the island’s rainforests - a coiled streak of living emerald among dripping leaves and moss-covered branches. Its scales shimmer in shades of jade and turquoise, perfectly blending into the humid canopy where sunlight filters in fragments.

Equipped with heat-sensing pits between its eyes and nostrils, this viper hunts with precision in the dim glow of moonlight, detecting even the faint warmth of a passing frog or small mammal. Though venomous, it is shy and reclusive, striking only when provoked - a misunderstood guardian of the green realm.

Once abundant across rainforests like Sinharaja and Knuckles, it now suffers from habitat clearing for tea plantations, urban sprawl, and logging. Many are killed out of fear, despite their crucial role in controlling small animal populations. Conservation efforts stress education and habitat protection rather than fear-driven persecution.

To encounter one in the wild is to glimpse the ancient balance of predator and forest- beauty born of silence, moisture, and shadow.
