I love this monster of a city.
An all-consuming Leviathan of steel and light, magnificent and predatory, spreading across twelve thousand square miles and feeding on one hundred twenty million lives.
Here, everything and anything is possible. The impossible has been processed, regulated, and sold back at a premium price.
Flying cars clog the sky like restless insects. Robo-taxis never stop, never sleep. Life is prolonged, not preserved. Service androids scrub the streets, repair the towers, and quietly replace the disposable. Universal basic income flows just high enough to keep the lights on and hunger tolerable, never enough to live, too much to die.
Neo Tokyo, 2045 – Never Let Me Go
Exploitation of the masses waits in orbit, on asteroids mined to dust. Vacations exist on Mars, carefully curated and astronomically priced. Time itself is elastic and a new playground for the wealthy. Immortality is advertised everywhere, always one upgrade away, always deferred. Everything is available. Always. Provided you’re filthy rich.
The demon city knows me.
It hums my name through surveillance grids and data centers, through cameras that never blink. I am its conductor, synchronizing traffic, labor, consumption, desire, keeping the machine from tearing itself apart for another day.
Neo Tokyo, 2045 – Processed, Regulated, Sold.
You are my sweet darling and my brutal jailer.
My everlasting treasure and my burden.
I will not leave you. I cannot.
Until death parts us,
and even that feels negotiable in this rotten hellhole.
Now.
Forever.
