Reproduction: Late maturity, single infant with long dependency.
Ecological role: Seed dispersers and major influencers of forest structure; flagship species for ecosystem protection.
Main threats: Poaching, habitat loss, disease transmission (human–gorilla), regional insecurity.
Conservation notes: Ecotourism, anti-poaching patrols and veterinary interventions have increased numbers in certain areas- continued protection of habitat and health monitoring are essential.
