**Joan Semmel (b. 1932)
--- USA
Joan Semmel’s canvases insist that bodies be seen fully aging, desiring, and asserting autonomy and she does so with a bold painterly language.
Her large-scale works often place the viewer face-to-face with skin, texture, and posture in combinations that are at once erotic and introspective; she interrogates how bodies are politicized and how desire is negotiated by both sitter and viewer.
Semmel’s paintings fold in abstraction and intense color to resist taxonomy: the body is not simply anatomical data but a site where identity, memory, and power intersect.
Viewing a Semmel is to experience a negotiation of looking - you are asked to reckon with desire while honoring agency.
