Vast underground cavern with rows of glass cylinders (upright, soft blue internal glow) containing huge ancient brains. Each cylinder rests on a futuristic machine with softly glowing indicator lights. A team of explorers in futuristic spacesuits is examining the machines.
The alternative was extinction.
This system does not sleep. It does not pause for handover or allow for error
margins measured in comfort. It persists by remaining attended—continuously,
precisely, without relief—because interruption is indistinguishable from failure. The
apparatus exists to keep thought present where absence would be noticed.
The vessels are maintained at optimal clarity. Nutrients circulate. Signals stabilize.
Redundancies confirm alignment. There is no terminal state built into the design;
only sustainment and replacement. Identity is irrelevant beyond function. Duration is
engineered. Capacity is monitored.
No single person is permitted to understand the whole. Knowledge is partitioned,
interfaces narrowed, language constrained. Records are sufficient for operation and
insufficient for reflection. This is not secrecy. This is load management.
Above, normal life proceeds. Policy debates conclude. Art advances. Children learn
names for stars. None of this interferes. The system was designed to be compatible
with ignorance.
Below, attention is held in glass and light. Corrections are made before deviation
accumulates. The work does not improve with time. It does not become safer. It only
continues.
Attrition is expected. Succession is scheduled. Consent is procedural. The system
assumes compliance because it requires it. There is no contingency for refusal.
This arrangement does not ask to be understood. It cannot be admired or
condemned without destabilizing effects. Its only measure of success is that nothing
else changes.
The system remains active.
So does the world.
