When night gives way to day in the morning and the first ray of sun chases off the last of the twilight, I wake up in the construction trench where I sleep. The migrant workers arrive, and I have to slip away, or else they’ll report me. So I crawl out and clean off the dirt as best I can. That is how I rise—in the construction trench where I sleep—that is how I rise. I haven’t shaved or washed in ten days, and I own nothing but a bottle of rum in my coat pocket. I treat myself to that for breakfast; afterwards, I bum a cigarette and a shilling. And people come toward me, advancing like a wall. I am the only one walking toward them, or so it seems. Yet I summon my courage and close my eyes as I take the first step. It makes no difference at all whether I work or not; praying is enough to earn a bowl of thin monastery soup. Leave me be, for today they are filling in my construction trench. Leave me be.
