Another well-known PC game series was of course The Sims. This later becam Sims 2 and Sims 3 (and for those who trust the Internet Sims 4). Basically a user-redefinable town with user-creatable virtual people, who get jobs and buy houses and stuff, etc. You can customise the appearance and clothing of your Sims, build relationships, and choose from a series of Expansion Packs containing Universities, Nightlife, Magic, and Adventure. The Sims series often had rather buggy AI, for example in a house with 4 toilets, a family of 4 would all try to queue for the same toilet instead of picking one that is not in use. There were other attempts at "virtual dolls-house" games, such as Creatures (a bunch of furry animals on a spacecraft), and Sim Ant (a bunch of ants), plus several Sims-alikes (see YouTube for many examples). There were also many "core engine enhancements" for The Sims, such as NRAAS and MoreAwesomeThan You that fixed many of the bugs (such as outfit changes) but sometimes introduced their own bugs.
