ArtistHighly Textured Salt-infused Watercolor oil pastel, ink, charcoal painting of small, mean and grotesque spriggin, small little ancient grotesque old troll man with large head, guarding treasures, storm clouds, whirlwinds, moonlight, moon beams, old growth forest, 1600s, Arthur rackham, Luigi Bechi, Rembrandt, James Holland
Spriggins are small, they're mean and grotesque,
And though they guard treasures, stay away that is best.
They're thieves, villains and kidnappers too,
They'll rob a house and then they'll rob you.
They can cause whirlwinds, blighting of crops,
Destroy the wheat fields, that's not where it stops.
They can do all manner of mischief and though,
they're quite small.
They can inflate themselves up to be rather tall,
And into monstrous shapes, and so we are told,
Many believe they are ghosts of old.
If you should meet one, don't bother to shout,
Just turn your clothes inside out,
And if you have this handy, though not many do,
We are told holy water is effective too.
SPRIGGINS AND MUSHROOMS
WHAT’S THE CONNECTION?
WELL, WHEN THE POEM MENTIONS…
Spriggins are small,
THIS REMINDS ME
OF…
mushroom spores,
which are
so small that
billions of them
are
ejected from just one mushroom.
Can you imagine, BILLIONS from just one tiny mushroom!
WHEN THE POEM MENTIONS…
mean and grotesque.
THIS REMINDS ME…
OF
How some mushrooms
appear mean, as they are
poisonous,
and some mushrooms,
like false morels
are pretty ugly.
(look’em up―see for yourself!)
WHEN THE POEM MENTIONS…
Stay away, that is best!
THIS REMINDS ME…
Again, there are many
poisonous mushrooms,
and unless you have
absolute positive
identification
and knowledge that the
mushroom
is safe.
STAY AWAY,
that is best!
WHEN THE POEM MENTIONS…
Though they are quite small,
can inflate themselves up rather tall,
into monstrous shapes
THIS REMINDS ME…
of how
small spores
can grow into
massive mushrooms
for example,
A large puffball
can grow 3 feet across
and weigh about 150 pounds.
During pliocene times
mushrooms were the
tallest living beings
(even lying on their side)
upon the planet.
3 feet W
26ft TALL
Even today
one of the
largest living organism
on Earth
is a
fungus,
located in
Eastern Oregon
in the United States.
It covers 10 square miles
and is over 2,400 years old.
