Transport Tycoon (by Chris Sawyer) was another of the early CD-ROM games for the PC, along with Myst, 7th Guest, and Return to Zork. Given a fairly large map with many small towns, you had to transport various resources by rail, road, plane, or ship between (for example) farms and factories, factories and cities, or coal mines and power stations (this was the quickest way to get rich quick). In later versions, you could actually build your own industries -- I remember building a whole cluster of coal mines in one corner and a power station in the opposite corner, and running quad railway tracks straight across the map :) Other similar games included Railroad Tycoon (by Sid Meyer, who also wrote Civilization) and Build Your Own Model Railway (or whatever it was called).
