An enormous amount of "rubble" stone had been quarried for public works projects ; the rocks you see here had been distributed along the thoroughfare in preparation for planned street improvements.

However, the stones had been quarried from an accursed place. When the workers uncovered a crack in the earth, they woke a plague of demon locusts from hibernation in the deepest rivers of lava. This was The Accursed City's Doomfall, when the hell-creatures devoured all life in the city and, indeed, in a circle with a three-league radius centered on the quarry. It is said that the demon locusts went back into hibernation deep in the Earth, but when they hear or smell living things coming close, they re-awaken and fly forth, devouring every living thing they find.
