**Zanele Muholi (b. 1972)
[South Africa]
Zanele Muholi’s work is both art and activism: rigorous, intimate portraiture that centers Black queer lives with dignity and insistence. Muholi photographs male-identifying and transmasculine subjects not as objects of curiosity but as fully realized people each portrait asserts presence, pride, and resilience against erasure.
Their images are often formal, composed with careful lighting and direct gaze, turning the portrait into a political claim: to be seen on one’s own terms.
Muholi’s work transforms representation into a tool for recognition and social change.
