**Sylvia Sleigh (1916-2010)
# USA / Wales
Sylvia Sleigh quietly rewrote a chapter of art history by turning an ingrained convention on its head: instead of women posed for the male gaze, she painted men with the same tenderness and deliberation usually given to female subjects.
Her paintings are small revolutions - intimate tableaux that insist on dignity, personality, and the everyday presence of the sitter. In The Turkish Bath and other works she staged her subjects not as anonymous erotica but as distinct people, complete with the little marks and gestures that tell a life story.
The result is both political and humane: Sleigh’s canvases are invitations to look differently, to recognize the male body as a bearer of interiority rather than a simple object.
