Sylvia Sleigh quietly rewrote a chapter of art history by turning an ingrained convention on its head: instead of women posed for the male gaze, she painted men with the same tenderness and deliberation usually given to female subjects.

Her paintings are small revolutions - intimate tableaux that insist on dignity, personality, and the everyday presence of the sitter.
