Jesus is sentenced to death
1 Then Pilate ordered Jesus to be scourged. 2The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on His head . They dressed Him in a purple robe, 3 They came up to Him, saying:
— Long live the King of the Jews! — and they hit Him in the face.
4Pilate went out again and told them:
— Look! So I'm bringing Him out again, so that you can make sure that I don't find any fault in Him.
5And Jesus came out wearing a crown of thorns and a purple robe , and Pilate said
, "Behold, Man!
6 As soon as the chief priests and guards saw him, they cried out:
— Crucify me! Crucify Him!
But Pilate replied:
— Take Him yourself and crucify Him, I find no fault in Him.
7The Jews insisted:
— We have a Law, and according to our Law He must die, because He calls Himself the Son of God!
8 Hearing this, Pilate was even more afraid. 9 He entered the residence again and asked Jesus:
But Jesus did
not answer him.
10— Are you refusing to talk to me? Pilate said. "Don't you understand that I have the power to free You or crucify You!"
11And Jesus replied:
"You wouldn't have any power over Me if it wasn't given to you from above. Therefore, the one who handed Me over to you has a greater sin.
12 From that moment, Pilate was looking for an opportunity to free Jesus, but the Jews continued to shout:
"If you let him go, then you are not a friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king is an enemy of Caesar!
13When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat in the judge's chair at a place called the Stone Platform , and in Hebrew Gabbat . 14 It was the Friday before Easter , and the sixth hour.
"Here is your King,— Pilate said to the Jews.
15 They screamed:
— Take Him away! Get out! Crucify Him!
— Crucify your King? Pilate asked.
"We have no king but Caesar," the high priests replied.
16 Then Pilate gave them Jesus to be crucified .
Prompt: The image depicts Jesus standing before Pilate, who is questioning him about his claim to be "the way, the truth, and the life." In response, Jesus calmly and confidently affirms his statement, while Pilate, skeptical and unsure, asks "What is truth?"
