A sparse Vista stretched all the way to the horizon, 2819 square kilometres, larger than the European country of Luxembourg, about as untamed as you would imagine. It was barely a tree to be seen.

The Aboriginal people lived on the banks of the river at the fringes of town in skimpy humpies made from paper bark trees and scrubs of rusty corrugated iron.
