ArtistLady with long blonde hair arising out of the water of a lake wearing a bejeweled silken gown... white and magnificent... holding aloft a magnificent broadsword, looking foward, mist on the water, very atmospheric scene... ... in the style of Arthur Rackham
The Lady of the Lake (Welsh: Arglwyddes y Llyn) - in the Arthurian legend a human enchantress who provides King Arthur with the mythical sword Excalibur, as well as possessing magical powers, Excalibur invests in Arthur the rightful sovereignty of Britain. The Lady of the Lake, also known as Viviane or Nimuë, lives in a castle beneath the lake surrounding the island of Avalon.
She has been associated with a Celtic goddess and with stories of water fairies and her story may have combined several stories about ladies of lakes. Her origins may lie much further back in time in the ancient Greek legends. The mythical Greek sea nymph Thetis, mother of the hero Achilles, similarly provides her son with magical weapons.
