Callisto is a tragic and beautiful figure from ancient Greek mythology whose story connects the natural world with the stars of the night sky. She was originally one of the nymphs who followed the goddess Artemis, the protector of forests and wild animals. As a companion of Artemis, Callisto lived a life devoted to nature, hunting, and freedom in the wilderness.
According to myth, her beauty caught the attention of Zeus, the king of the gods. Through deception he approached her, an act that eventually brought terrible consequences. When Zeus’s wife Hera discovered what had happened, she became furious with jealousy and transformed Callisto into a bear.
As a result, Callisto wandered through the forests for many years as an animal, unable to speak or return to her former life. Despite this transformation, the memory of her human identity remained within her. One day she encountered her own son, Arcas, who had grown up without knowing the truth about his mother. As a hunter he nearly killed the bear that stood before him.
At the last moment Zeus intervened and placed both Callisto and Arcas among the stars to prevent the tragedy. Callisto became the constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear, which still shines brightly in the northern sky.
Her story became a symbol of transformation, loss, and eternal remembrance. Even today, when people look at the stars of the Great Bear, they are reminded of the myth of Callisto and her journey from the forests of Earth to the heavens above.
