maypole dance
An oil painting depicts children dancing around a maypole on a grassy hillside, with snow-capped mountains in the background under a blue sky. The maypole is a tree with white blossoms, and colorful ribbons (red, blue, yellow) spiral down its trunk and are held by some of the children. There are nine children in total, forming a circle around the maypole, some holding hands or ribbons. They are dressed in period clothing: dresses, aprons, knee-length pants, and shirts. Their hair colors range from blonde to dark brown. Two animals are in the foreground to the right: a white goat standing and a dark-colored dog standing on its hind legs, seemingly playing with the goat. The hillside is green with patches of brown, and sparse trees and bushes are visible. A small building and a red-clad figure are faintly visible on a distant hill. The overall impression is one of a cheerful spring celebration in a pastoral setting.
