A fox squirrel is largest species of tree squirrel native to North America. In our area we have the Sherman’s Fox Squirrel, which is a unique, charismatic species found in south Georgia's and Florida’s pine flatwoods and sandhills. They are up to twice the size of a common gray squirrel, and have long bushy tails that are almost as long as their body. They have distinct coloring — black masks with white ears and noses, orange tones on their underbelly, silver or mottled color patterns on their backs. They love open pine forests, are more solitary and slow-moving, and often seen on the ground foraging. Fox squirrels are rarely brought into rescue, but if one is, and can't be reared with other fox squirrels, they will imprint on humans and not be prepared for release back into the wild. Years ago I met a young naturalist that had just such a companion who traveled with her in a cat carrier and hung out on her shoulder. I saw a fox squirrel feeding yesterday and it made me think of her. Thus this dream.
