Gauguin in the Adirondacks
Oil on Canvas, c. 1894 (Fictionalized)

This work captures the artist's brief, imagined excursion into the Northern New York wilderness. The irony of Gauguin in the Adirondacks lies in the stylistic clash between the cold, rugged timber of the American Northeast and Gauguin’s tropical, Tahitian sensibilities.

The verticality of the spruce and birch trunks is treated with a stately, rhythmic repetition, while the forest floor is reimagined as a lush, neon-hued tapestry of ferns and moss. By flattening the rolling Adirondack horizon into bands of shimmering yellow and violet, Gauguin subverts the traditional "Hudson River School" approach, replacing their grand romanticism with his own brand of sensual, symbolic mystery.
