The Carp That Remembered the Sky

In the depths where sunlight dissolves into memory, a carp dreamed of something it could not name. It drifted among slow currents and silt, its scales remembering light they had never seen. Around it, the river whispered of a place above water — a world that shone, burned, and vanished.

Every evening, when the surface rippled with moonlight, the carp felt a pull inside its bones, as if a current moved through it that did not belong to the river. The others mocked it gently. “There is nothing above,” they said. “Only the ceiling of our world.” But the carp no longer believed in ceilings.

One night, the water turned strange — silver and trembling, full of voices. The carp rose without knowing why. It swam faster than it ever had, through reeds and sleeping shadows, through the cold skin between worlds.

For a moment, the carp became a blade of light, bursting from the surface in a storm of droplets. The air clung to it, thin and wild, and it saw — not the sky as others might — but a great pattern unfolding, a vast river of brightness that seemed to breathe. It was as if the water had become infinite and was teaching it to fly.

Then gravity took hold, and the carp fell back, the vision fracturing into ripples. But it carried something down with it — a shimmer that did not fade. The river around it now seemed wider, deeper, filled with unseen doors.

And though the carp would leap again and again, never reaching that endless place, it no longer cared. It had seen the sky — and the sky, for one heartbeat, had seen it too.
