Una sera sfumata di nebbia cala, l'aria è densa di un freddo umido. I salici si piegano bassi, i loro rami nodosi dalla corteccia verdastra filtrano la luce fioca di un unico, grande e opaco sole che pende basso all'orizzonte. Sotto i salici, l'erba che ha sopportato il luccichio del gelo ora giace liscia e traslucida, ogni filo d'erba è un minuscolo prisma di ghiaccio. Le tife costeggiano l'acqua, i loro pennacchi piumati fluttuano come bandiere spettrali in un vento lento e invisibile.
