Butterfly:
“Little rose… lean closer.
The rain grows sharper.
Let my wings be your shelter.”
Rose:
“You must be freezing too.
Why shield me from a storm
that hurts your wings more than mine?”
Butterfly:
“Because I can fly away,
but you must stand and endure.
Let me take the cold for you.”
Rose:
(soft laugh like warm perfume rising)
“You always think I am the fragile one…
but look, even now,
I can still smile for you.”
Butterfly:
“I see it… that small, shining smile.
It is brighter than anything
this grey sky ever gave.”
Rose:
“And your wings,
they glow like a dream
when the raindrops cling to them.
You look like hope…
falling softly from heaven.”
Butterfly:
“Then let us stay like this…
you smiling through your pain,
and I shielding you through mine.”
Rose:
“Yes… in this storm,
let us keep each other warm
in the only ways we know.”
And the rain kept falling,
but it never touched her petals again.
