** Iberian Lynx - Lynx pardinus
Short:
One of the world’s most endangered wild cats; endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. Once near extinction, now recovering due to strong conservation efforts.
Facts:
Habitat: Mediterranean scrublands, open woodlands, and grasslands in Spain & Portugal.
Threats: Habitat loss, decline of rabbit populations, road accidents, illegal hunting, genetic isolation.
Details:
The Iberian Lynx is a medium-sized wild cat known for its tufted ears, spotted coat, and short tail with a black tip. It is one of the rarest feline species on Earth and the most endangered lynx species. Its survival is tightly linked to the European rabbit, which makes up over 80% of its diet. When rabbit populations crashed due to disease and habitat loss, Iberian lynx numbers fell dramatically.
By the early 2000s, fewer than 100 individuals remained in the wild. Thanks to major conservation programs-breeding centers, habitat restoration, rabbit population recovery, and building safe road crossings-the species has made a remarkable comeback. Today, the population has increased to more than 1,500 individuals, though it is still considered endangered.
The lynx prefers dense Mediterranean scrub with adequate cover for hunting and denning. Road collisions remain a serious threat, as well as genetic bottlenecks due to isolated populations.
The Iberian Lynx is now considered a conservation success story, showing how targeted efforts can bring a species back from the brink of extinction.
