More about Waldemar and the Story of Sir Hiss

Night had long since fallen over the forest when Waldemar, together with Robin Hood and his men, reached the camp, a small clearing among ancient oaks, hidden deep beneath the black branches of Sherwood Forest. Although the men tried to appear calm, their movements bore a weariness that stemmed not only from the long march but also from the certainty that somewhere beyond the hills, Sir Hiss already knew they were on their way, for stories about him spread faster than smoke on the wind. No sooner was the fire lit than the men sat silently around it, sparks rising into the darkness like small stars that had forgotten their way. Robin sat on a felled tree trunk, his green cloak draped over his shoulders; Little John silently examined his axe; and Waldemar clutched tightly the strange implement that had accompanied him for days, for since their encounter with Sir Hiss, its faint ticking had begun to grow ever more irregular, as if reacting to something approaching. For a long time, no one spoke. Only the fire crackled. Then something rustled suddenly in the bushes. Several men immediately drew their weapons, but instead of an attack, a small figure appeared among the ferns, scarcely taller than a child, but clearly not human. The stranger had shaggy dark fur, long ears, and bright amber eyes, along with a tattered coat full of small pockets and a soot-smeared lantern whose light flickered greenish. An imp. Slowly, he approached the fire, without fear, without haste, and when his gaze fell upon Waldemar, he merely nodded. "You are looking for Sir Hiss," he said in a rough voice. No one answered at once. Finally, Robin rose slightly. "And who are you?" The imp simply sat down by the fire, stretched his small hands into the warmth, and smiled weakly. "Someone who stayed near him too long." The wind picked up. The flames cast long shadows among the trees, and then the imp began to speak. Many years ago, he said, Sir Hiss had not been the lord of a castle, but just an ordinary prisoner deep beneath the catacombs of Black Hollow, locked behind iron and stone because even bandits and kings feared him. Not for his strength. For his wit. Sir Hiss had never screamed, never begged, never tried to escape like other prisoners. Instead, he had waited. Days. Months. Years. He had studied every move the guards made, every voice, every sound, even the rats' footsteps in the walls, until eventually he knew more about the prison than his own keepers. "And then?" Waldemar asked softly. The imp looked into the flames. "Then he began to tell stories." At first, the guards had only laughed, but Sir Hiss spoke of vaults of gold beneath ancient cities, of hidden keys and names that opened doors, and gradually the men not only listened to him but believed him, until one night a guard opened his own cell, just to learn more.
