A Gothic Madonna with a very pious, delicate, sad, finely drawn face, a tear running down her cheek. She wears a puffed headscarf over her long, brown, curly hair. She wears a simple dark green bodice laced at the front and a long dark red skirt. A long, velvety dark blue cloak falls over her shoulder, held together with a golden brooch. The Madonna holds this cloak open over the women and children hiding beneath it. A group of pale women and children are protected by the cloak, sad, pale women and children in shabby grey clothing seeking shelter beneath it, background: a battlefield in grisaille technique, by Hieronymus Bosch, Brian Froud, Sergio Cerchi, Angela Betta Casale, Catrin Welz-Stein
Madonnas with protective cloaks have been present in the visual arts since the 13th century. The motif was originally based on the legal custom of cloak protection, whereby a person could be granted legal protection by covering them with one's cloak. Unfortunately, this custom no longer exists.
