The forest had grown still, in a way that wasn't empty, but filled with anticipation, as if every tree had already known that Waldemar would reach this place, and the air smelled sweet, not like ripe fruit alone, but like memory that had waited too long to be rediscovered. Hanging between the trunks were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of apples, yet none were ordinary, for in each one was carved a gateway, delicate and luminous, as if cut from light, and through these gateways one could see, not always clearly, not always completely, but enough to understand that they led not to spaces, but to possibilities. Waldemar stopped, his large backpack resting heavily on his back, and for the first time on his journey he felt not only curiosity, but also a slight hesitation, for each of these apples seemed to recognize him, as if he himself had left traces in them, long before he knew they existed. He approached one of the apples cautiously, almost reverently, and when he peered through the small gate, he saw something that silenced him: a path he could have taken, a moment that could have turned out differently, a life that might have been simpler, calmer, less full of detours, and for a moment he wondered if that was the true meaning of these gates—not return, but temptation. But before that thought could take hold, something moved among the trees, silently, like a shadow that had decided to become visible, and out of the twilight she emerged. The guardian was neither young nor old, neither kind nor cold, but something in between, something that could not be grasped, and her eyes held the same depth as the gates themselves, as if she had seen every decision ever made. She did not approach, but remained standing, at precisely the distance necessary for Waldemar to see her without fully comprehending her. “You have come far,” she said, and her voice sounded not like words, but like the rustling of leaves passing on a secret. Waldemar nodded slowly, but he said nothing, sensing that every answer was already known. “These gates,” she continued, “are not ways back. They are reminders of paths you have not taken.” Waldemar looked again at the apples, and suddenly their beauty seemed different, no longer inviting, but probing. “And you decide…?” he asked finally, and the guardian smiled almost imperceptibly. “I do not decide for you,” she said softly, “I only decide whether you are ready not to go back.” A wind stirred through the forest, making the apples sway gently, and for a moment it seemed as if all the gates flickered at once, as if calling him, beckoning him, reminding him, and Waldemar closed his eyes briefly, not to turn away, but to hear what remained within him when all these voices fell silent.
