Enclosed subterranean hoard chamber carved into jagged stone, irregular cavern volume with fractured walls, collapsing ledges, uneven ground planes, embedded mineral seams. Space excavated, not constructed. Primary mass: massive winged reptilian territorial apex predator occupying rear-center elevation atop treasure mound. Torso twisted off-axis, left shoulder driven forward, right hip pulled back, spine coiled under load. Wings flare unevenly — one extended wide, other partially folded — creating asymmetrical silhouette. Neck arched in aggressive S-curve, head offset left of body centerline, jaws open in attack roar. Fire-breath erupts forward-right into foreground airspace, flame shearing across attackers, smoke and heat distortion tearing through central volume. Body low and driving forward. One foreleg lifted mid-strike, talons spread, opposite forelimb crushing into gold slope. Rear legs braced wide, claws biting fractured rock. Weight transfer visible through shoulders and hips. Treasure mound forms steep metallic terrain: coins, shields, swords, broken armor, relic fragments sliding under load. Hoard functions as unstable ground, not backdrop. Secondary agents: squat muscular orc attackers with heavy brow ridges, flattened noses, tusked jaws, thick necks, compressed skulls. Faces strained, mouths open in shouted effort, eyes squinting against heat and sparks. Primitive plate armor, leather wraps, dented helms. Attackers climbing hoard, bodies pitched uphill, hands gripping embedded weapons and loose coin. Lead attackers within striking distance of raised claw — minimal separation between predator and assault line. Motion field converges: attackers surge upward while dragon drives flame downward. Fire intersects raised weapons, airborne coins, smoke, ash, debris. Sparks erupt where chains of heat meet metal. Active force exchange dominates composition. Flame lights faces from below, casting warped shadows across brutish features. Reflected fire ripples across treasure slopes and fractured stone. Dust, ash, and coin fragments suspended mid-flight. Lighting structural: primary warm firelight from dragon mouth, secondary glow from heated metal, deep ambient shadow in cavern recesses. Environment communicates siege and dominance: elevated hoard platform, attackers constrained by slope, creature owning vertical hierarchy. Read aloud to the players…
Heat reaches you before the light.
The cavern opens wide, revealing a vast shadowed chamber. At its center rises a
mound of treasure—gold coins, shattered shields, split helms, and half-buried
remnants of adventurers who came before you. Weapons lie scattered like fallen
leaves.
Perched atop this hoard stands the Fire Tyrant.
Its wings stretch from wall to wall, membranes glowing faintly in torchlight. Smoke
curls from its nostrils. Eyes track you with patient intelligence, not surprise. It has
been awake for some time.
You realize, too late, it’s been waiting for you.
The dragon inhales.
Roll for initiative.
ADVENTURE BACKGROUND
Long before the surrounding valleys were settled, the wyrm Pyraxxul the Ascendant
claimed these caverns as its dominion. Over decades it reshaped underground halls
into a defensible lair, enslaved lesser creatures, and established itself as an
undisputed tyrant of the region.
Caravans vanished. Villages paid tribute. Companies of mercenaries were reduced
to scorched armor and rumor.
The local barony offers a reward of 10,000 gold pieces for proof of Pyraxxul’s
destruction, with salvage rights to whatever treasure the party can extract—if they
survive.
Unknown to most, Pyraxxul’s hoard is more than wealth. Buried beneath the gold
lies an ancient dwarven vault, sealed centuries ago and rumored to contain relics of
elemental binding.
Pyraxxul knows this.
That is why it never leaves.
MODULE OVERVIEW
Dungeon of the Fire Tyrant is designed for 4–6 characters of levels 6–9.
This adventure emphasizes:
-Tactical combat in constrained spaces
-Environmental hazards (heat, smoke, unstable stone)
-A dragon that does not fight fair
Retreat is always an option.
Success is not guaranteed.
Area 1: The Broken Causeway
A narrow stone bridge spans a lava-fed fissure. The remains of previous adventurers
are visible below, fused into the rock.
Two fire-scaled drakes nest in alcoves above the bridge. They attack once the party
is halfway across.
Treasure found here:
120 gp melted into stone (requires chiseling)
+1 Shortsword (warped but serviceable)
Potion of Fire Resistance (cracked vial, 75% potency)
Area 2: The Hoard Chamber
This is Pyraxxul’s throne.
The dragon will not immediately attack unless threatened. It prefers to test intruders
with flame and fear, isolating weaker party members and collapsing exits when
possible.
Pyraxxul fights intelligently.
It targets healers.
It destroys cover.
If reduced below 30% health, it attempts to retreat to the upper vents to recover and ambush later.
Dungeon Master’s Note
Pyraxxul is not merely a monster.
It is a ruler defending territory.
The dungeon reflects this.
Every corridor feeds into kill zones. Every open space favors wings and fire. The
treasure mound is positioned to force melee combat uphill.
