The Yoshioka family were the official sword instructors to the Ashikaga shogunate and dominated Kyoto’s martial arts scene.
Miyamoto Musashi, still a young warrior, challenged and defeated Yoshioka Seijūrō, the head of the school, in a duel (leaving him severely injured).
Seijūrō’s younger brother, Yoshioka Denshichirō, then challenged Musashi—and was killed in the rematch.
