ArtistOne of his most famous works is the National Congress of Brazil, designed in collaboration with Lucio Costa. The building is made up of two twin towers, each with a circular shape and a bold, swooping curve that creates an unmistakable profile on the Brasilian skyline. Another iconic building by Niemeyer is the Cathedral of Brasilia, which features 16 concrete pillars that rise towards the sky and converge at the top to create a cross shape. The interior of the cathedral is bathed in natural light and has a spiritual and ethereal quality that is in keeping with its purpose. Niemeyer’s use of concrete was particularly innovative, and he deliberately left the surfaces rough and bare to create a sense of texture and movement. His designs emphasized the organic nature of forms and shapes, rejecting the harsh angles and lines of traditional architecture in favour of softer, more flowing lines. Overall, Niemeyer’s Neo-futuristic architecture represents a bold, visionary style of design that emphasized innovation, experimentation, and a rejection of the past in favour of a brighter, more dynamic future.
