the famine, want and woe, twin beautiful sisters, 20 years old, singing. Sisters of a grisly coven. They haunt the penal state of poverty, sit brooding over a million wrongs. But above the song and chorus flashes heaven's crimson light. Then the sisters want and woe, in skulking form saw how fruitless their labour as the Lancashire mill clanked on.
Two emaciated, pale women with long, dark hair, wearing tattered and dirty dresses, sit in the foreground, their faces etched with horror, mouths agape in screams, and tears or dirt streaking their cheeks. Their skin appears sallow, and there are red marks or blood on their hands and arms. The woman on the right has red stains on her chest area. Behind them is a bleak industrial landscape with large, multi-story brick factory buildings dominating the midground, featuring numerous windows, some of which show vague figures or lights within. Tall smokestacks rise from the factories, spewing thick, dark smoke that blends into a menacing, blood-red sky.
