I dedicate this dream to the gay Syrian cashier at my favorite supermarket.

Imagine you are a gay man fleeing a country where you are persecuted as a pervert to a country where same-sex love is permitted. But here you are rejected because you have the wrong skin color and the wrong religion and are classified as homophobic because of your origin. And when you come out as gay, you are rejected by people from your own cultural background.

Or imagine you are a Southeast Asian woman whose parents fled a war. And you wear born into a society that still considers you to be a foreigner, and where you, just because of your looks, are constantly suspected of being an asian prostitute or the child of a woman who was sold to a European man through a marriage broker. And if you are recognized as a lesbian, you are accused of converting and taking away the heterosexual women from the good heterosexual European men.

Discrimination against people who are classified into several defamatory categories at once is disproportionately worse than only being discriminatted because of only one category. That is intersectionality.
