Chapter 5 – The Hall of a Thousand Names
As the figure stepped from the shadows, even the lantern light seemed to freeze. Elyan felt the cold before he could fully make out the being. The Keeper of Forgetting was taller than any Memorai. His body was formed from silver mist and living darkness intertwined. Where a face should have been floated a smooth mask of black stone. Within it glowed two pale lights like distant stars. With every step he took, the whispers of the memories around them fell silent. “Run!” Tillo shouted. Elyan did not hesitate. Together they rushed between the shelves. Behind them came the slow footsteps of the Keeper. He did not run. He did not need to. The darkness itself seemed to move with him. Tillo led Elyan through a narrow passage he had never noticed before. Roots of the immense Memory Tree stretched through the walls like silver veins. The air was filled with the scent of ancient stories. Deeper and deeper they ventured into the hidden regions beneath the Archive. “Why is he following us?” Elyan asked between breaths. “Because you touched the chest.” “What is inside it?” “Something that was meant to be forgotten.” They reached a stone door completely covered by living roots. Tillo placed his mist-like hands upon its surface. The roots began to glow and slowly withdrew. A passage opened beyond them. The moment they stepped through, the doorway sealed itself once more. The footsteps of the Keeper vanished. Before Elyan lay a place beyond anything he had ever imagined. A vast hall stretched beneath the roots of the Memory Tree. The ceiling rose so high that it disappeared into silver mist. Thousands of glowing symbols floated freely through the air. Some were formed of golden signs, others of blue light or shimmering silver lines. They drifted slowly like stars across a night sky. Elyan stood speechless. “What is this?” Tillo looked upward with awe. “The Hall of a Thousand Names.” “Names?” “Not a thousand. In truth, millions. Every name of every being who has ever left a memory within the Sea of Memories.” Elyan watched the floating symbols. Some resembled writing. Others looked like pictures or mysterious signs. Yet somehow he understood them instantly. A golden symbol drifted past. “Arelion,” he murmured. A blue one followed. “Mireth.” Then a silver light. “Soravin.” He turned toward Tillo in amazement. “I can read them.” “Every Memorai can.” Slowly they walked through the hall. Everywhere floated names from forgotten ages. Names of ancient kings. Names of travelers. Names of beings that no longer existed. Each one shone like a fragment of eternity. “Why are they kept here?” Elyan asked. “As long as a name remains, a memory can never truly die.” The words settled deeply within him.
