The unfamiliar city looked like a huge, kind Beast. Its yellow lantern-eyes gazed gently upwards, where the sky was adorned with thousands of twinkling lights and a shiny moon-ball. “Perhaps,” thought the Beast, “up there, high above, in a faraway, wonderful world that holds the Moon Tree on its branches, my reflection wanders somewhere among the stars…” Sometimes someone passed along the sleepy street, and it seemed as if the Beast shifted from side to side, softly rustling evening posters. Above the rooftops, weather vanes stood still with drowsy crows perched on them… Usually, the Girl sat on her branch all alone. But one night, she felt someone breathing gently on her back. Nastya turned around and saw a big Owl. The bird looked at the traveller with kind, golden eyes. “Ugu-gu…” said the Owl and softly nudged Nastya with its side. From that time on, Owls became frequent visitors to the Moon Tree. They sat still beside her, gazing at the Moon without blinking. Some began to doze, and their eyes turned into tiny slits. When a star fell from the sky and a tender, trembling sound floated in the warm air, the sleeping birds twitched, gripped the branch tighter, and drifted back into their mysterious Owl dreams. The Girl fell asleep, and then the Moon blurred slightly and began to spin slowly with the stars, like shining glass pieces in a huge kaleidoscope.
