The metallic crack of the broken chain still echoed through the ancient passages beneath the castle, while the black mist crept slowly from the narrow cracks of the massive door, spreading like living ink across the cold stone floor. Penelope instantly sensed that this place was older than anything above the castle. Older than Sir Hiss. Older, perhaps, even than the forest itself. The air was heavy with something unseen, something that not only observed but remembered. Sir Hiss stood motionless before the door, his head bowed, while behind the iron, that deep voice rang out again, calm and almost friendly. "Ssssilas..." Penelope involuntarily took a step back. She had never seen Sir Hiss like this before. Not mocking. Not superior. But like someone who had suddenly reverted to the person he had once been, long before Silas had become the fearsome Sir Hiss. His narrow reptilian eyes closed for a brief moment. "Don't speak that name again," he said softly. A slow, deep laugh sounded from behind the door. Not loud. Not wild. Much worse. Patient. As if something down there had waited centuries to speak to him again. More silver chains began to tremble slightly. Only now did Penelope notice the strange markings engraved in the ancient metal. Circles. Lines. Symbols that reminded her of winding paths or maps of unknown places. Some seemed almost like the same symbols Waldemar had described on his mysterious device. "What is behind this door?" she asked quietly. Sir Hiss didn't answer at first. Instead, he slowly approached the iron until his hand was almost touching the cold surface. Immediately, the black mist began to pulse more intensely. "Long ago," he said finally, calmly, "this castle wasn't mine." Deep below them, that slow heartbeat sounded again. Powerful. Heavy. The entire floor vibrated slightly. “The first lords of this fortress weren’t kings,” Sir Hiss continued. “They were guardians.” Penelope felt the cold intensify within the ancient walls. “Guardians of what?” Slowly, Sir Hiss raised his gaze to the black door. There was something in his eyes now that seemed almost like shame. “Of the first gates.” No sooner had he spoken the words than one of the ancient symbols on the door began to glow a faint green. Then a second. Then dozens more. The light flowed slowly through the engraved lines like liquid fire, and suddenly Penelope understood that the entire door itself was a kind of enormous lock. Not built to keep anything out. But to imprison something within. Something heavy was moving behind the iron. Slowly. Enormously. Penelope now clearly heard deep breathing. “Back then,” Sir Hiss said, his voice trembling, “I believed I could gain control over it.” Again, the quiet laughter sounded from behind the door. “And now IT controls you,” Penelope whispered. Sir Hiss didn’t answer. But his silence was enough. Suddenly, a dull rumble began deep within the castle walls.
