More about Instruments of Life

Excerpt from: Xenobiological Interfaces of the Outer Reaches, TTA Archive
Reference 7-441-C

The device encountered in the Khepri Chasm on Pelion-β was initially catalogued as
a Class-III autonomous construct, pending further functional analysis. Subsequent
observation has required its reclassification. Though mechanical in outward
structure, the object exhibits metabolic-analog behavior: energy intake, internal
circulation, self-repair, and what can only be described as adaptive response to
proximity and intent. Its origin remains unknown. No propulsion system has been
identified, yet it maintains stable suspension within the canyon without measurable
exhaust, radiation spill, or gravitational distortion.

Contact protocols were first attempted using standard xenotechnical instrumentation
carried by Survey Specialist Arlen Voss. The handheld array—designed for
atmospheric, electromagnetic, and biochemical sampling—elicited an immediate
resonance response from the construct. Orbital filaments formed around the device,
synchronizing not to the operator’s biometrics, but to the tool itself. This marked the
first recorded instance in TTA history of a non-biological organism interfacing directly
with Terran scientific equipment without translation middleware.

Only later did reconnaissance units observe the native lifeforms of the region—
pelagic, translucent organisms occupying the lower thermal layers of the chasm—
alter their migration patterns in response to the construct’s activation. Analysis
suggests that the device is neither machine nor organism in the conventional sense,
but an intermediary system: an instrument by which the local biosphere regulates
itself across geologic time. That a human investigator would reach toward it with an
instrument of his own was, in retrospect, an alignment rather than a coincidence.

In the end, no data was extracted that day which could be entered cleanly into the
Trade Authority’s classification tables. What remains in the record is the image of
two instruments, each built to measure life in its own way, briefly acknowledging one
another across a boundary neither was designed to understand.
