BACKSTORY : Jubal Tucker pointed to the East and said, "What is that on the horizon ? This is the prairie - there are no mountains here ! Is that some kind of storm front ? I never saw a storm front with clear skies above it !" Jubal looked at his brother Virgil, who had been to college.

Virgil nodded and said, "They do look like mountains, those lower ones, and the upper level is like clouds, but the prairie didn't just grow a mountain range." He paused and then told Jubal, "It could be a weather phenomenon we're unfamiliar with. On the other hand, we could be looking through a giant wormhole field into an Earth with a mountain range. And in that case, there's nothing that says the field can't move, and you know, the more I look at it the more I think that it must be growing..."

"Growing?" Jubal asked, alarmed. "Yeah," Virgil answered, "and I see now that it must be coming to us." "Well, let's get out of here, then !" "Sure, maybe it is temporary and we just have to avoid it for a little while." Seeing his brother's dubious look, Virgil added, "But look, whatever it is, we can do the most good right now by reporting this." "To who?" "Three places, I guess : the police, the air force base, and my old physics professor at the university." Seeing that Jubal looked a little relieved, Virgil went on, "Let's go - we'll swing by the police station first, they're closest and they've got a good view of the east." They got into Jubal's pickup, and so it was that their metaphysical, quasi-Lovecraftian adventure got started...
