Count Nikola IV Zrínyi, Croatian: Nikola Šubić Zrinski (Zriny, c. 1508 – Szigetvár, September 7, 1566), the hero of Szigetvár. The legendary castle captain who sacrificed his life for Szigetvár comes from Croatia. In 1566, Zrínyi heroically defended Szigetvár with his 2,300 soldiers against an army of approximately fifty thousand led by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I for nearly a month, but in the end, he and his remaining army were trapped in the inner castle, which caught fire due to a gunpowder explosion. Instead of surrendering the castle, he broke out at the head of his soldiers on September 7 and died a heroic death.
