The murder of Queen Gertrudis of Merán. “Reginam occidere nolite timere bonum est si omnes consentiunt ego non contradico” - Archbishop János of Esztergom’s famous ambiguous sentence regarding the murder of Gertrudis. On September 28, 1213, the participants in the conspiracy led by Ban Bánk murdered the Hungarian Queen Gertrudis of Merán, the first wife of Andrew II (r. 1205-1235). The assassination in the Pilis Forest, which was later immortalized in the drama of József Katona and in the opera of Ferenc Erkel, eventually became one of the most famous crimes in Hungarian history, but the exact events have now been obscured by the beliefs and legends that arose in the wake of popular works. One of the most unpopular queens in Hungarian history was the scion of a rising princely family. At the beginning of the king's reign, a royal feud broke out, and public opinion later blamed Gertrude for the feud. The great lords of the country, hoping that this would put an end to the feud, decided to kill the queen.
