ArtistAs a language nerd who grew up in '70s Melbourne and learned IPA from the appendix pages of a dictionary, those /æ/, /e/, /ɛ/ have been the bane of my existence learning foreign languages that have two or more vowels in that zone of the trapezoid.
A top-down, slightly angled shot captures an open book, displaying two pages that are nearly white. The left page is mostly out of view, with only a small portion visible. The right page features a black square with two black diagonal lines intersecting at the center, forming an 'X' shape within the square. Above the square, written in black, are the characters "a /e". To the right of these characters, also in black, is the character "e". Below the square, a line of black text reads "e Wuid a thou, ous ace the foregn, be coviadom." Faint, grayish text underlies the square and the visible text throughout the page. The bottom right corner of the page is slightly creased and turned up. The book's spine, a thin strip of red, is visible on the inner top left edge. The book rests on a textured surface, possibly wood.
